The Breakfast - an
extract from an article by travel writer - Katy
Roy, after a recent visit
' ...... a word about an English breakfast. Now, I
don't usually eat breakfast, If I do at all, it is usually a piece
of fruit or a bite of cereal, so the breakfast part of the deal excited
me not at all, until I had my first one. Perhaps touring makes one
ravenous. Or perhaps one cannot violate the order of what is a sumptuous
three-course meal.
One sits down in an inviting breakfast room to a choice
of fruit juices,, tea or coffee and helps oneself to muesli or cereal
with milk. That's about it as far as my breakfast is concerned, but
then comes the main course; a plate absolutely covered end to end in
eggs made to one's choice, fried bread, mushrooms, baked beans, succulent
sausages, bacon and fried tomatoes. It smells too delicious to resist,
and I don't. Then a perfect way to end the meal seems to be with crisp
toasts smothered in butter with home-made honey or marmalade or preserves,
and then wash the lot down with yet more of a perfect cup of tea. I
have to skip the fruit. And the wise ones who decreed that beds should
be followed by a good breakfast were right after all. '
